Yarn of January - The Croft Aran

At the end of 2021 we got new yarn from a British Spinner called West Yorkshire Spinner. I have heard that there is a long relationship between this Spinner and a big Finnish yarn producer Novita and now Novita is importing few of their yarn to Finland. Our yarn of the month this January is WYS Croft Aran, beautiful aran weight yarn from Shetland wool.

Because I didn’t know much about Shetland Islands or Shetland wool, I sat down and dived into internet’s endless sea of data. And oh what fun it was!

Shetland Islands have the most northern point of Great Britain and islanders consider themselves skandinavian and honor their Viking heritage. The weather is quite cold all year around, almost never above 20 degrees but not much under 0 degrees either. And wind, well you can imagine being in the middle of the North Sea…

Shetland wool has been well appreciated for long and it has a good reputation among fiber lovers. This Croft Aran that we have is soft and warm and it has 12 beautiful colors inspired by the Shetland Island landscape. Use this yarn for your colorful stranded knitted garments like Andrea Mowry’s  Throwback cardigan or Reykjavik Soft by Meiju K-P. Or knit the wonderful wrap-around shawl Skarn from 52 Weeks of Shawls.

I mean this yarn can really take you on a trip. Knitting it and listening Ann Cleeves great novels of detective Jimmy Perez and you can almost hear the island wind in your ears…
